Ages 8-11

Why Art Matters

Kids this age are full of questions, ideas, and a growing desire to figure things out for themselves. Art gives them the space to get curious, experiment, and discover what happens when they try something new.

Through painting, drawing, sculpture, and mixed media, students explore color, line, shape, texture, and technique while building their artistic skills. They learn to make creative decisions, work through challenges, and figure out what to do when things don't go as planned.

And that's where some of the most important learning happens. Art isn't always easy! Sometimes things don't turn out the way you imagined, a technique takes practice, or you have to rethink your approach. Learning to sit with that frustration, try something different, and keep going builds problem-solving skills, flexibility, and perseverance. Kids begin to see that mistakes aren't failures; they're part of figuring things out.

Art gives children the freedom to explore their ideas, learn by doing, and discover that there's rarely just one right way to create something. Along the way, they build skills, confidence, and the courage to take on new challenges.

Our Studio Environment

Our Studio Arts classroom is a place to get curious, try new things, get a little messy, and figure things out along the way. We provide a welcoming, hands-on environment where students can explore materials, develop new skills, and bring their own ideas to life.

We balance creative freedom with clear expectations and supportive classroom management. Students learn to respect one another, their teachers, and the studio and its materials, while developing independence and responsibility for their shared space.

Our teachers introduce techniques, offer guidance, and encourage students to push beyond what they already know. There's room to experiment, make mistakes, work through frustration, and discover unexpected solutions. We want students to feel comfortable asking questions, taking creative risks, and learning from one another.

The focus is on creating, not getting everything right. We want our students to leave feeling proud of what they've made, excited about what they've learned, and ready to see what they can do next.

What Will My Child Create?

As young artists grow, so do their projects. In Foundations, students develop their ideas, learn new techniques, and tackle creative challenges while exploring concepts like composition, perspective, proportion, and color.

Rather than focusing on a single medium, students explore drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and mixed media. Artistic skills build on one another. Painting strengthens an understanding of color and value; sculpture develops spatial awareness. Like an athlete cross-training to improve performance on the field, exploring different art forms helps young artists become more versatile creators.

Projects typically take two to four classes to complete. In an eight-class session, students generally complete three projects, giving them time to build skills, make creative decisions, and see their ideas through.

Our goal is to build a strong artistic foundation while keeping curiosity and experimentation at the heart of creating. Students learn to take creative risks, work through frustration, and discover what’s possible when they stick with a challenge.
